The number of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card users in Myanmar is relatively low compared to other countries in the region, according to Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM).
There are 160,000 local users in the
country, with a total of 275 ATM machines installed nationwide
currently, official data from CBM shows.
Myanmar's banks have issued 161,601
cards to local users by this July and the government officially allowed
the ATM use in the country in December 2011.
Myanmar Payment Union (MPU), the first
and only electronic payment system in the country was launched
officially last September. It first card was debit card. The MPU was
joint-ventured by three government banks and 14 private banks. China's
CUP card and Japan's JCB card can also be used in the MPU network which
is still in process to launch internationally.
The country has currently seven private
banks namely Myanmar Citizens Bank, Cooperative Bank, Myawaddy Bank,
Kanbawza Bank, Asian Green Bank, Ayeyarwady Bank and Myanmar Apex Bank
operating ATM services locally.
Though the country had used the ATM system from 2000 to 2003, the country's banking crisis in 2003 forced it to close down.
