Unilever, a UK-based multinational consumer goods company is planning to launch its first factory in Myanmar next month, as part of a US$667 million investment program.
Unilever is the world's third-largest
consumer goods company according to 2011 reports. Its products include
foods, beverages, cleaning agents and they are the world's largest
producer of ice cream.
Harish Manwani, the Chief Operating Officer for Unilever, said:
“Unilever invested in Myanmar about 80 years ago. This is our return.”
The multinational has over one hundred
factories throughout the world producing toothpaste, shampoo, food and
personal care products. Its famous products include Knorr chicken broth
powder, Sunsilk shampoo, Clear shampoo, Lux soap, Sunlight soap and
Ponds cosmetics. All are established brands in Myanmar.
The company aims to stand at the top of
Myanmar’s consumer goods market which is expected to grow within next
ten years. Although they plan to build a second factory in Myanmar,
details have not been announced.
Many Myanmar workers who were previously
employed by Unilever’s factories in Thailand have also been given
opportunities to work in factories back home. With economic reforms
underway, many migrant workers are returning to seek equal opportunities
back in Myanmar.
The factory is expecting to provide two
thousand jobs in the space of two years. It is still waiting for
approval from the Food and Drug Administration Department but is
expected to start operations in August. Unilever will appoint around 150
employees to start with and plans to assign the duties to a further 100
staff at the end of this year.
