NAY PYI TAW - Leaders of Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos on Thursday
emphasised cooperation and inclusive growth in their relationship.
“We have witnessed great economic advances in the region over the
past years. Now, you all come to Myanmar, we are working hard to move
from military rule to democracy. To end our long term internal problems,
it is very critical for us to move forward. I want the younger
generation of Myanmar to be engaged in the change of our country and to
have a better life in the future,” Myanmar President Thein Sein said in
his address on the opening day of the World Economic Forum on East Asia.
He also promised that there will be no waivering on this task, as the
government is strongly committed to reforming the nation’s economy from
a centralised government model to one “based on free markets”.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung expressed his nation’s
commitment to regional cooperation and noted the “urgency for vigorous
action” to achieve the integration goals of the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations.
He emphasised better connectivity among inland Asean states,
particularly on the East-West Economic Corridor, given it will bring
tremendous benefits for the whole region.
“Building roads and easing the flow of goods - I call on business to
invest in projects along the corridor,” the Vietnamese prime minister
said.
Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong said his country also has
experienced rapid economic development recently which is a very positive
sign for the nation. Due to better trade facilitation and regional
economic integration, declines in household poverty rates are being seen
in Laos, he said.
The three nations have an opportunity to learn from successes and
missteps of developed nations in order to accelerate existing
development models for a sustainable growth. All three leaders agreed
that "inclusivity" must be set as a priority for the future.
