Myanmar Rice Federation has denied a report by a foreign news agency that claimed 70,000 tonnes of tainted rice from Myanmar were to be destroyed in Cameroon.
The federation’s general secretary Ye
Min Aung said the false statement is an attack to Myanmar rice which has
gained market access in Africa.
Ye Min Aung said only 50 tonnes of rice
(1,000 bags) out of 70,000 (140,000 bags) tonnes that were exported to
Cameroon will be destroyed only because the goods had been damaged on
the way.
He said, “It’s not true that Emahta 25
point [i.e. a kind of Myanmar rice] from Myanmar will be destroyed in
Cameroon due to low quality. Myanmar’s rice has penetrated the African
markets to an extent which caused concerns to some traders there. They
want to take away the market shares we have gained and attacked us in
such a way.”
It was a long voyage as the ship
discharged 13,000 tonnes of rice at other African ports before arriving
in Cameroon. Weak ventilation in the hatch of the ship on the long
voyage caused sea water’s precipitation causing damage to some bags of
rice, he explained.
“Any rice from any country will be
damaged under this condition. News report should be careful as
exaggeration can adversely affect our Myanmar rice market,” he noted.
Ye Min Aung also urged Myanmar rice
exporters to focus more on the rice quality in future, and warned them
to be careful of any attack in competition for market shares.
