Myanmar’s marine product exporters are preparing their goods to meet the international quality standards as the European Union (EU) is going to restore its Generalized System for Preferences (GSP) for Myanmar next month.
“EU will begin GSP [for Myanmar
products] in June. We have been exporting fish and prawns to EU. But, it
would be better when EU GSP starts. Now, we are preparing the quality
of our products to meet the international standards,” Han Tun, vice
chairperson of Myanmar Fishery Federation, said.
Such preparation is important, as their products will have to compete globally in EU, he said.
Myanmar exporters will be required to adopt EU standards in processing their goods in order to gain EU market share, he added.
Myanmar lost EU GSP a decade ago due to
human right issues in the country. Last year, EU eased trade sanctions
against Myanmar in view of its political and economic reforms, and
considered reinstating GSP for Myanmar goods.
Myanmar is currently exporting various
marine products to England, Netherlands, and Italy. The United States is
also considering GSP for Myanmar goods, according to earlier reports.
“We are now exporting marine products to
the United States. If US both eased sanctions and offered GSP, it will
be marvelous. We may get a chance to compete with other countries
there,” Han Tun said.
