A local company recently made an
investment proposal for two hydropower projects in Shan State, eastern
Myanmar, according to the Directorate of Investment and Company
Administration.
Rich Yedanar Shwe Myay Company proposed
to solely run the two projects in Kokang region, and they have already
applied for permission with the Myanmar Investment Commission, who will
decide whether to approve the projects or not.
“One proposed project site is near
Laukkaing region and another in Kokang. The company wants to run both
projects,” said an official from the Directorate of Investment and
Company Administration.
Myanmar has planned to construct eight
hydropower dams in Shan State, and three dams are under construction.
Eleven more are undergoing feasibility studies.
In addition, Ta Sang hydropower dam
(which was lately renamed as Upper Thanlwin project) in Shan State will
complete its construction in 20 years.
Among the eight projects, three have
been approved for loans from China. Two projects, Upper Yeywa and Kyaing
Taung dams, have already received Chinese funding and will complete
construction between 2018 and 2019, while the third, Shweli, is still
awaiting the loan.
According to official announcements, all
the above projects are under BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer), JV BOT
(Build, Operate and Transfer with Joint Venture agreement) or separate
arrangements with ministries.
