Of the 700,000 tonnes of rice and rice products, 552,462 tonnes was rice, 113,986 tonnes was broken rice and 30,928 tonnes was sticky rice. All crossed the Muse border crossing into China.
“Last fiscal year, Myanmar exported 1.4 million tonnes rice. Two weeks before ending this fiscal year, more than one million has been exported,” said Win Myint, the union minister for commerce.
The MRPA said that this year’s export will be slightly lower than last year. In order to raise exports, better quality paddys need to be cultivated and international norms should be used to guarantee quality products.
“At the moment the demand is slow. Plus, the offer isn’t at right price,” said Chan Thar Oo, a merchant from the MRPA (Muse).
Export quality rice brands such as Sin Thwal Latt, Hmawbi-2, Yadanatoe should be given priority, he added.
