Norwegian company Telenor and Qatar-based Ooredoo were both declared winners of a bid that granted them permission to provide private telecom services to Myanmar but they are still waiting for operating licences.
Telenor said in a press release that the MIC has approved the investment permit:
"When the permit is in hand, we will issue another press statement. Meanwhile, the company is expecting to complete the licence process as soon as possible. Outstanding delay can significantly affect the launching of their telecom services," said Telenor.
The Norway-based Telenor, however, assured that they were still going to keep their pledge to roll out telecommunication network across Myanmar within 8 months after being awarded the license.
Telenor and Ooredoo were selected as winners of a government bid for two private telecoms licenses in June 2013. They expected to receive their licences by last December, but the government has yet to pass a vital telecommunications by-law which will outline the rules and regulations by which the companies must operate.
Myanmar Telecommunications Law was legislated last October. The telecommunications by-law was firstly published to get public feedback last November and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has lately submitted it to the Attorney General Office for approval.
The MIC said it had given the investment permits to the foreign telecoms operators during their January 8 meeting in Nay Pyi Taw.
