ASEAN foreign ministers meeting retreat to begin in Bagan, Myanmar

BAGAN, Myanmar, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers and representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN) have gathered in Bagan, an ancient city in Mandalay region of Myanmar, for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) Retreat due to begin later Friday.

The AMM Retreat is a follow-up of Thursday's Senior Officials Meeting (SOM), at which tasks such as the ASEAN Community building, priorities of Myanmar chairmanship, the ASEAN Community Post 2015 Vision and the adoption of guidelines on external relations were discussed.

Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin expressed his belief prior to the meeting that significant outcome would be produced from the meeting through cooperation and collaboration of all sides concerned.

He disclosed that the meeting would focus on implementation of follow-up tasks agreed at the 23rd ASEAN Summit, prioritized tasks to be implemented in 2014, regional and international issues and achievement in the plan to establish a regional community in accordance with Begawan Declaratuion on the ASEAN Community Post- 2015 Vision.

He vowed that during Myanmar's term of ASEAN chairmanship, the country will intensify efforts to develop small and medium enterprises (SME) for the development of ASEAN and to narrow the development gap among member countries as part of efforts to realize ASEAN Vision and ASEAN Integration Initiatives.

During Friday's AMM, Myanmar and Malaysia are expected to sign an agreement on the establishment of a joint commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation among others.

The AMM Retreat represents the first regional meeting hosted by Myanmar since it took over from Brunei the ASEAN chairmanship on Jan. 1.

ASEAN comprises 10 member countries -- Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
