Tiger Airways, a budget airline from Singapore, is being criticized for poor service after local passengers faced delayed baggage problems at Yangon International Airport.
Many Myanmar passengers flying from Singapore to Yangon on October 13 and 14 were unable to claim their checked-in luggage as it had not been brought onto the airplane.
“I waited over an hour to get my baggage but it was not there. I was told to come back the next day. I had to pay extra for this baggage. An airline shouldn’t do this,” said a local passenger who flew from Singapore to Yangon on the night of October 13.
“Also, I saw that the baggage of foreign passengers had been loaded while those of most Myanmar passengers were left behind. It’s like they don’t care about us because they think we won’t dare to complain.”
The passenger added that some people at the airport were still waiting to claim baggage that had not been brought with their flight on October 12.
Swe Swe Lwin, general manager of Myanmar Aviation Centre, which is the local representative of Tiger Airways, referred Eleven Media to ground handling services at Yangon Airport.
“We only sell the air tickets. We don’t know anything about this issue because the passengers have not sent any complaints to us,” said Swe Swe Lwin.
Since October, a few budget airlines have begun direct flights to Myanmar. Tiger Airways has run direct flights between Singapore and Yangon since October 1 while Nok Air has scheduled flights between Yangon and Mae Sot, as well as Mae Sot and Mawlamyine, since September and October, respectively. It will also begin direct flights between Yangon and Bangkok on November 1.
Fees for many budget airline flights cover only the ticket itself. Passengers must pay an extra charge for excess baggage apart from carry-on luggage.
