No more fishing rights for foreign fishing vessels

The Myanmar Fisheries Federation has decided not to renew fishing rights to foreign fishing vessels, according to a Federation official reached yesterday.

At present, the Thailand-based Ryuji International Company Limited, which is fishing under a licence that expires at the end of March, is submitting an extension request to the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development.

A meeting on renewing fishing rights was held in Nay Pyi Taw recently. Officials from the MFF, researchers and local fishing businessmen, including the Union Minister, decided not to renew fishing rights.

“We have decided not to renew fishing rights to foreign fishing boats as soon as their contract is done,” said MFF chairperson Soe Win.

The Government earns more than US$ 12 million (Ks 11.67 billion) per year in taxes from foreign boats fishing under the current licensing arrangement. The final licence for these fishing boats will expire on March 31, 2014.
