The first Myanmar music online store has been launched on Sunday to combat piracy and illegal downloads.
The Myanmar Music Store has been selling Myanmar albums online for a week trail run before officially launching its website. It plans to release popular rock star Lay Phyu’s single album, “Diary” which has already sold 4,000 copies.
"There are many advantages of buying music from online. It saves time and energy," said Ko Ko Lwin, managing director of Legacy Music Company.
"The online market will become a new platform for both local and international distribution of Myanmar albums as the traditional distribution system has been plagued by piracy. Anyone can easily buy the music if they have internet connection," he said.
Cover songs by local artists will only be available for local audiences due to copyright infringement issues.
The music store charges Ks 1,800 (US$ 1.86) for latest albums and Ks 1,500 (US$1.55) for older albums. Single tracks can also be bought for Ks 300 (31 cents) per song.
"The prices are much cheaper than outside. You can also listen to the demo versions and buy single tracks," he added.
Local audiences can buy the music through MyanPay, YPay, SMS and phone bill while overseas audience can buy them through PayPal. Gift cards will also be available in local stores, minimarts, and supermarkets in the near future.
