Insufficient classroom teaching blamed for popularity of private tutoring

Private tutoring have been plaguing the educational system due to lack of sufficient teaching in the classrooms, Upper House MP U Nu said.

“We need to be aware that the ‘tuition disease’ is a chronic disease that is difficult to treat and it has taken roots in the education system,” MP Nu announced in the Upper House on Thursday.

“Both parents and students have been caught up with private tutoring instead of depending on basic education schools is due to lack of sufficient teachings. The Ministry of Education needs to set down transparent plans to tackle this ‘tutoring disease’ what has taken roots among the students, teachers, and parents,” said MP U Nu.

In Myanmar, it is a common practice for school teachers to give private tutorial after school hours to get extra income. Students from kindergarten to the tenth grade attend private tutoring to get good grades, pass the exams and avoid discriminations from their teachers in the classes.

MP U Nu said parents have to work hard to pay for the tuition fees for their children even though they do not have enough food and students who cannot afford to take private tuition from their teachers are being discriminated in the class.

San Lwin, deputy minister of education, responded that the Ministry has already issued a ban on private tuition of teachers from government schools and taken actions against those who taught private tuition.

However, Upper House Speaker Khin Aung Myint said the reason why students from private schools such as ILBC do not need to take private tutoring while students from government schools have to attend them is due to insufficient school teaching.

Actions alone is not enough in preventing school teachers from giving private tutoring and the government needs to provide sufficient salaries to them so that they can stand proudly as teachers, he added.
