Telenor will launch mobile services in 2014, according to the announcement from the Norway-based mobile company on Thursday.
“We have already established our mobile
operations successfully in five dynamic markets in Asia. We are looking
forward to working with the government and the people of Myanmar in
developing the country’s telecommunication industry, a sector that will
play a key role in Myanmar’s socioeconomic development,” said Sigve
Brekke, Executive Vice President and Head of the Telenor Asia
Operations.
“Myanmar will be an important pillar to
support our growth strategy and we are fully committed to responsibly
leverage our group competencies to provide access to mobile
communications services for the people of Myanmar. We now look forward
to working with the authorities in Myanmar on the final steps in the
licence process,” said Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of Telenor Group.
Telenor will use HSPA (High Speed Packet
Access) and LTE-Ready (Long Term Evolution) technology for Myanmar to
match the sophistication of leading networks around the world today, and
plans to achieve nationwide coverage in Myanmar within five years. A
full range of mobile services, both voice and data, will be commercially
launched as the initial offering, anticipated to happen in 2014.
