Telenor moves Thai exec to head Myanmar business

Norwegian operator appoints Telenor group executives to management positions in Myanmar, but pledges to build pool of local talent.

Telenor has named the management team that will lead its new Myanmar business, including appointing Petter Furberg as CEO.

Furberg is currently CFO of DTAC, the Thai mobile operator majority owned by Telenor, and has served within the Telenor group for 14 years

"Furberg's appointment as CEO is testament to his excellent record of achievement with Telenor, including more than a decade working in Asia," said Sigve Brekke, head of Telenor Asia, in a statement.

"I am thrilled with the opportunity to lead Telenor Myanmar at this very exciting time in the country's emerging telecommunications industry," Furberg said. He added that Telenor plans to build a team made up of local talent in Myanmar.

However, the management positions at Telenor Myanmar all go to people already working in the Telenor Group.

Chief technology officer Prathet Tankuranun and chief people officer Tipayarat Kaewsringarm will both join Telenor Myanmar from DTAC, while CFO Lars Erik Tellmann, chief marketing officer Sharad Mehrotra, and chief corporate affairs officer Gunnar Bertelsen all currently hold management positions at Telenor Asia.

All appointments are effective once the relevant authorities in Myanmar give their approval, Telenor said.
