Project to supply drinking water for Yangon townships

Construction has begun on the Lagonpyin Water Supplying Project which will generate water to four townships around Yangon as well as the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, according to government officials.

The project plans to supply 40 million gallons of water to Dagon Myo Thit, Thingangyun, Tharkayta and Dawpon townships. 30 million gallons will be drinking water and the remaining will go to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone.

“We will supply drinking water to the public after purifying irrigated water. Firstly, we have aim to supply water for Yuzana Garden City which doesn’t get water from Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).

We will also provide water to those townships," an official from Water and Sanitation Department told to Eleven Media."

"We will have to generate water for the Thilawa Special Economic Zone commercially,” he added.

Lagonpyin Water Supplying Project is located at the corner of No.2 Highway and Circular road near Masoe creek in Dagon Myo Thit (South) Township collects water from Lagonpyin dam.

Dagon Myothit, Thingangyun, Tharkayta, Dawpon townships are now getting a little water from the YCDC while the Yuzana Garden City has to rely digging artesian wells which contain a lot of iron. The YCDC targets to complete the project within two years.
