China's Huawei to work with Myanmar state-owned telecom

The Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has been chosen to work with the State-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) to further expand local mobile networks, according to sources from MPT.

MPT invited tenders from several mobile companies to expand their telecommunication reach. International companies such as Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia Siemens and ZTE all submitted bids, but Huawai was finally chosen and promises toinvest  US$34 million in MPT.

Huwei and MPT alongside Yatanarpon will be operating two local telecom licences while two remaining licences open to international companies are awaiting announcement on June 27.

“Two foreign companies selected for telecom permits will be announced on June 27. They will set up their own mobile networks in the country. But two local telecom operators will also compete with other companies for mobile networks. We will start our works soon after the official announcement,” said an official from Huawei.

Huawei submitted its bid for tenders on April 22 and was selected on June 7.Myanmar currently has less that 10 percent of mobile phone users and promises a huge potential for the growing mobile market. The government is offering two licenses that have attracted strong competition from international telecom companies.
