Border trade resumes in Rakhine State after "Mahasen"

Border trading resumes in Rakhine State, western Myanmar bordering Bangladesh, starting from May 18 after a brief shut-down due to the tropical cyclone Mahasen, according to local sources.

Myanmar's border trading with Bangladesh came to a halt on May 13 as a precautious measure against the cyclone.

Border traders in Maungdaw say the trade between the two countries is still sluggish and the main products in trade are bamboos and seafood.

And travel across the border between the countries also resumed on May 18, officials say.

"Boats from Bangladesh started arriving on May 17 after the cyclone hit the country. Vendors also came with them. People from Maungdaw started travelling to Bangladesh from May 18. Border trading also resumes in Sittwe, the capital of the state," said a resident trader from Maungdaw.

Fishing boats and passenger ships in the state recommenced their works as well on that day after they had to stop their jobs for a few days due to the cyclone.

The weakened Cyclone Mahasen caused low damage than originally feared in Bangladesh and Myanmar, according to the UN.
