Yangon developmental plan due next month

The report on the first phase of the developmental plan for Yangon will be completed next month, according to the planning committee.

Toe Aung, director of the Yangon City Development Committee’s city planning and land administration department, said the report on the first phase will be released after the committee holds its fourth meeting next month.

The report on the second phase will be completed in December, he added.

The first phase will include a land-use plan to identify areas for skyscrapers and commercial districts as well as other high-priority projects, including clean water supplies.

The Yangon Master Plan is being drafted by YCDC, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Yangon Region government.

Twenty-two percent of the Yangon area has already been developed and 51 percent has been allocated for farmland, while 9 percent remains undeveloped. Green areas comprise only 6 percent of the city and they are disappearing as Yangon grows.

Industrial zones cover 6,665 hectares of land, including 20 that have been established, four that have not been completed and one, Thilawa, that is under development.

The planning committee has proposed classifying another 700ha for industrial zones, depending on the city’s population and the number of workers.
