Myanmar to hold forum on industrial zone and housing development
Myanmar’s industrial zone and housing sector development forum
will be held on January 22 and 23 in Yangon, according to the sources.
The forum is co-organised by Nemo Partners, South Korean consulting firm, and Gunhong International Co. Ltd in Yangon.

Myanmar's first foreign exchange service launched by non-financial firm
Foreign exchange service in Myanmar run by a non-financial private company is now available in Yangon, the commercial hub of the country, according to sources. Farmer Phoyazar Company, a non-financial private business, started to provide foreign exchange service on January 1.

Lanka organized an 11-member business delegation to Myanmar last
December. The delegation visited Yangon in Myanmar on the 19th and
returned after a successful 4-day fact finding mission. The delegation

Myanmar eyes Dawei do-over
Myanmar is seeking to modify the Dawei deep-sea
port and special economic zone contract to have a holding company to be
set up soon handle the investment instead of Italian-Thai Development
Plc (ITD).
"Myanmar is worried about the long delay of the project and wants to change the concession to a new holding company or special-purpose vehicle to be set up soon," said Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Board.
India builds agricultural research centre in Myanmar
Yangon: India has started building an advanced centre for
agricultural research and education in Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw to
train agriculturists in the country, official media reported on
Thursday.

Chinese products dominating Myanmar’s telecommunications, upshot of restriction
Myanmar’s telecommunication sector has been dominated by Chinese products, which is the upshot of the restriction imposed on products from other countries, Htay Win, chief engineer of the mobile communications department told the Eleven Media Group.
Statistics show that about seven out of
100 people in the country are mobile users. The Chinese products like
ZTE, Huawei are the fast-moving items in the local mobile market.
Shwe Taung, IGE to build two low-cost housing projects
Construction giants Shwe Taung Development Company and IGE Company have been granted permission to build two low-cost housing projects in the outskirts of Yangon, a source from the Ministry of Construction said.
The housing projects, namely Ayeyarwun
and Yadana, will be built over 220 acres of land in Dagon Seikkan
Township, said the Department of Human Settlement and Housing
Development (DHSHD), which is under the ministry.
Myanmar Airways International to fly local
Myanmar Airways International (MAI) will soon be offering local flights in the country.
“We asked the aviation authorities for
permission to fly domestic flights. We will run the domestic flights
after we get the green light to fly,” MAI marketing manager Aye Mayatar
said.
Vietnam to farm prawns in Myanmar
Vietnam is discussing with Myanmar to invest in sea water prawn farming, according to the Myanmar Fisheries Federation.
The federation earlier organised a trade
fair for international farming and marine products on December 7 and 8,
where firms from Southeast Asia and Europe participated.
Trading cards to be issued to boost Myanmar-Bangladesh border trade
Sittwe Border Trade Centre will soon issue Individual Trading Card for better border trading between Myanmar and Bangladesh, according to officials in the capital of Rakhine State.
Officials said that issuing the trading
cards, upon the request by local traders, is aimed at boosting border
trade with Bangladesh.
Myanmar suspends rice export amidst price fall
Myanmar has temporarily suspended export of more than 60,000 tonnes of rice as international and local prices have gone down. This has brought about difficulties to farmers, sources said.
The move came after a long holiday in
Africa resulting in the suspension of shipping operations during that
period. Operations are set to resume end-January.
Myanmar will resume exports only at the
end of this month. The rice is stocked with merchants. Businessmen said
the government needs to step in and buy the rice from the farmers.

No land for small businesses in Nay Pyi Taw
Myanmar businessmen are facing difficulties in buying land in Nay Pyi Taw to establish small and medium enterprises (SMEs), a businessman claims.
Though Myanmar’s new capital still has
vast stretches of vacant land, those who want to set up businesses find
it very difficult to buy land plots, which are mostly granted to
speculators.

The saltwater tiger prawn industry in Burma needs to upgrade from
traditional breeding methods to a more scientific approach, says several
leading breeders and businesspeople.
“Between five and seven tons of prawns are produced per acre in Thailand using scientific breeding methods,” said Tun Aye, from the Shwe Yamon Manufacturing Company, which exports prawns to Japan. “Burmese firms need to set up laboratories and the farms need to set up paddlewheels which operate 24 hours a day.

Ericsson rings the changes in Burma’s mobile market
The education sector in Burma is badly in need of funds; the country’s telecommunications infrastructure is one of the poorest in the world.

Japan's finance minister in Myanmar with development pledges

Japan's new government confirmed its support for the emerging democracy
in Myanmar on Thursday when Finance Minister Taro Aso visited the
country to reaffirm Japan's intention to cancel debt and help develop a
big industrial zone.
Myanmar has implemented rapid economic and political reforms since President Thein Sein's quasi-civilian government took over from a long-ruling military junta in March 2011 and Japan has moved quickly to cement business ties.
