Myanmar braces for more foreign arrivals

Yangon International Airport, the country’s main gateway, has recorded over 500,000 foreign travelers entering Myanmar from January 1 to end of June 2014.

“There are 506,274 foreigners have entered from the airport terminal. Most are from Thailand,” said an official from the immigration department from the Yangon Airport.

Thai travellers mainly visit Shwedagon Pagoda, Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda and Botahtaung Pagoda, which are important Buddhist destinations. Following Thailand, China then Japan listed the largest number of visitors.

The Yangon International Airport estimated to welcome 2.1 million travellers a year at the most. However, there were 2.4 million passed through the airport just last year and the country is expecting even more tourists to visit this year.
