International call charges high, say IT technicians

The international outbound roaming rates remain high and unacceptable, say consumers and IT technicians.

Myanmar Post and Telecommunication introduced the system to take effect since July 2 with roaming charges ranging from Ks 3,500 to Ks 5,000.

The users can call to Thailand, Singapre, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Belgium, Luxemburg, Romania, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Qatar, UK, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Moldavia, France, Papua New Guinea and Germany.

Charges for message will vary in accordance with the distance, ranging from Ks 400 to Ks 700.

“Everyone cannot go abroad and those who go have urgent job. They would only stay for a week at most. They bought SIM cards there which included internet subscription. I do not know why MPT makes it so expensive and may be they make most users unable to use the system. I think many cannot use it,” said a representative from Myanmar Soft-Gate Technology.

Post-paid mobile users have to pay adeposit fee of Ks 500,000 at airport for outbound roaming use and prepaid mobile users do not need to pay deposit.

“We use Viber and Tango via internet. The international roaming system cost a lot because it is interconnecting mobile networks. But it is good for us to access the system though charges are too high. Most people will not use it and will use Tango, Viber and Skype,” said an IT technician Yan NaungSoe.
