Although Ooredoo Myanmar originally said it will begin in August, they may even begin earlier, while Telenor are plying for time and will launch as planned in September.
“We don’t know when the sale will be. But I am certain that it is nearer,” said Ooredoo Myanmar’s information manager Thiri Kyarnyo.
As of July all Ooredoo staff are already using SIM cards with numbers starting with 0997 which includes internet subscription but they can use only internally.
Ooredoo has chosen six distributors in different regions and has connected with mobile shops. Telenor Myanmar already announced its target sale date to September and they will begin distributing around Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay.
Both companies plan to introduce SIM cards in some big towns and have promised to provide mobile network cover accross the country within the next five years.
“They have to give promise of the SIM card sale after they have been given telecommunication license. Ooredoo said they will start their sale in August and Telenor in September. There will be actions if they cannot start their sales in the time they promised to launch,” said Than Tun Aung from the Directorate of Telecommunications.
