Environmental assessment for Second Phase of Thilawa SEZ underway

The management committee members for Thilawa Special Economic Zone said they are going to discuss with the relevant officials on strategic environmental assessment for implementing the second phase of Thilawa SEZ.

The stakeholder meeting for the assessment will be convened on June 30 at the No. 2 Sub-Land Office (an interim office for Thilawa SEZ management committee) in Thanlyin Township, Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development.

The Thilawa SEZ covers the area of 2,342 hectares – the second phase covering 2,000 hectares whilst the first has been implemented on the area of nearly 400 hectares.

The SEZ has two sections: Class A is composed of the car and electronic industries; the textile and foodstuff manufacturing will be in Class B.

The Ball Corp has become the very first American investor of the SEZ, forming joint venture by Myanmar and Japan, according to the Ball-Myanmar Announcement Ceremony held at Chatrium Hotel on June 6.

On the occasion, the Ball Corp has signed the memorandum of understanding to run business in the Thilawa SEZ.

At the same time, the Japanese car accessories manufacturing company has contracted to invest in Thilawa SEZ, according to Tateshi Higuchi, Japanese ambassador to Myanmar.
