The government received Ks 400.57 million of Ayeyawady’s timber earnings, according to the study on natural resources, regional governments and wealth sharing in Myanmar.
The study, under the title “Natural Resources and Sub-national Governments in Myanmar: Key Consideration for Wealth Sharing”, was carried out by two researchers, Thet Aung Lynn and Mari Oye.
It was a fourth paper sponsored by the International Growth Centre, the Myanmar Development Resource Institute’s Centre for Economic and Social Development and the Asia Foundation.
Kayin State ranks second for contributing Ks 297.37 million in timber revenues to the central government, followed by Bago Region (Ks 241.88 million), Sagaing Region (Ks 224.64 million) and Shan State (Ks 157.01 million).
On the bottom list are Chin State (Ks 13.27 million), Yangon Region (Ks 110.07 million), Kachin State (Ks 125.30 million), Kayah State (Ks 25.55 million), Magway Region (Ks 124.34 million), Mandalay Region (Ks 84.77 million), Mon State (Ks 181.38 million, Rakhine State (Ks 118.89 million) and Tanintharyi Region (Ks 125.18 million).
Teak is the most valuable timber for export. The ban of exporting teak wood came into effect on April 1 with the aim to promote value-added wood products.
