Popular river cruises to expand operations

YANGON - Cruise companies are expanding their fleet to accommodate growing numbers of local and foreign passengers who are keen to experience Myanmar’s old capital with a relaxing sundowner on the Yangon River.

“Many foreign business groups from England, France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea are taking the river cruises. Some asked us to take them up to Hlaing River while some asked us to take them up and down the Yangon River,” said an official from a local cruise operator.

The Yangon River Cruise Organisation includes six companies that offer cruises on six different boats. According to the Inland Water Transport, the department is repairing the Tayza and Toepwar, and will add the two cruise ships to their fleet soon.

“As the passengers now interested in taking the river cruises on the Yangon River, we can get extra income for the department by operating the cruise ships,” said an official from the Inland Water Transport.

The river cruise line operator, Royal Garden River is also planning to launch the Royal Green River Baby which will provide nightly dinners on the Yangon River with a full capacity for 250 people.

Most river cruise ships have been using the Wartan and Botahtaung jetties to embark and disembark passengers on river cruises.
