MAI to start its first flight to UAE in 2015

Myanmar Airways International (MAI) will fly its first flight to United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2015, sources from MAI say.

“We have no arrangements to fly to UAE during this year. MAI is arranging the flights to UAE in 2015 to get market shares from Europe,” MAI’s marketing and public relations manager Aye Maya Thar said.

Before the agreement signed on Monday (March 10), Myanmar and UAE had no prior aviation treaty between them. In the new treaty, Myanmar lists MAI as an airline with permission to fly to UAE and UAE listed Emirates, RAK, Air Arabia and Aerovista airlines for flights to Myanmar.

“There were no restrictions in the treaty. Myanmar Airlines can land in every international airport in the UAE,” said Director General Tin Naing Tun from the Department for Civil Aviation.

Some countries that have signed aviation treaties with Myanmar have modified their agreements or signed new treaties since 2010. The main reason for modifying the treaty is to change to multiple destination status instead of single destinations.

Due to a new aviation treaty between Myanmar and Japan signed in February this year, Myanmar Airlines have been allowed to fly to Narita airport for the first time.

Myanmar has signed aviation treaties with 46 countries including the USA, Israel and European countries, in addition to neighbouring countries. The country’s first aviation treaty, with the USA, was signed in 1949.
