Gov’t approves 166 hotels in two months

The government has approved the construction of 166 hotels to accommodate record numbers of tourists visiting Myanmar, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

The hotels will be constructed in Yangon, Mandalay, Shan State, Taninthayi Region, Kachin State and Ayeyawady Region.

Most of the hotels, providing over 7,800 rooms, will invest in popular destinations and locations where international summits will be held.

International hotel groups have also been meeting with the Ministry to discuss investing in the country.

The ministry's director-general, Aung Zaw Win said Myanmar investors have been investing the most in the hotel industry and the ministry has received applications for the construction of at least five hotels per week.

However, most of the applications are for guesthouses and do not include any international standard hotels, he added.
