Mysterious spirit cave and source of gunpowder

For this intrepid travellers with a like for beautiful eerie places, Kyet Cave situated nine miles away from Loikaw, the capital of Kayah State is a must visit.

The 1700 foot-deep cave is said to host evil spirits and ghosts that are able to bestow miracles as well as evil spells. The cave is also called "Yarsu Ku" (Yarsu means gunpowder and Ku means hole) as people used to use bat-droppings found there to produce gunpowder for fireworks.

"Bats live inside the cave and waste products of bats can be seen. Long time ago, people used them for making firearms, and torches for religious ceremonies," said monk Vahyamaka who stays near the cave.

The cave is one of the natural wonders of the area and can be explored using torches. Opening times is 9am to 3pm and visitors can see 4-18 feet long coffins apparently used by rich people who insisted on being buried with their possessions. Local monk Vahyamaka denies ever seeing any ghosts.

"I’ve been living here for three years and I see just the beautiful natural scenes. I don’t see any supernatural thing or event," the monk explained.

Kayah State is now mostly open for visitors although certain areas are still largely out of bounds as a ceasefire is kept in place between the government and ethnic armed groups.

The cave is regarded as a special geological zone and the natural environment around it is protected.

"Although this was planned to regard as a religious place, we regard this area as a well-known and natural place,” said the Social Minister of Kayah State, Koe Yal.
