Urban development to curtail high-rises and provide public spaces

YANGON - Development along Yangon's riversides should leave 25 feet for public recreational use between buildings and the water according to Hlaing Maw Oo, director of Human Settlement and Housing.

The director was conducting a seminar on land utilisation in respective townships in Yangon on December 3. A proposal detailing the construction of urban development projects has been submitted to the government.

"We took business people and Myanma Port Authority into consideration before doing the proposal," said Hlaing Maw Oo.

The proposed urban development plan prohibited the construction of high-rises near the Botahtaung Pagoda, designating it as a green area. Pansodan Nanthida Jetty area is also to be designated as a green area.

If a private or governmental organisation construct high-rises, suitable areas must be made available for public recreational use.

"In implementing urban development projects in other countries, 30 or 50 feet is usually designated for public recreational use," said Kyi Kyi Mar, a representative from the regional parliament.

The discussions highlighted that they would forbid the construction of high-rises nearby Kawdawgyi Lake, Inya Lake and Maha Bandoola Park.
