Myanmar president calls for development of traditional medicine

Myanmar President U Thein Sein has called for the development of traditional medicine and pharmacy within the framework of related laws, official media reported Saturday.

U Thein Sein made the call in his message on the occasion of the 14th Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners' conference held in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.

The conference has been held annually since more than a decade ago.

The Traditional Medicine Law was promulgated in 1996 and the Traditional Medical Council Law in 2000, he said.

According to the president, the Institute of Traditional Medicine established in 1976 and the University of Traditional Medicine set up in 2001 have fostered not only bachelor's degree holders but also master's degree holders in Myanmar traditional medicine.

Starting form 2007, Myanmar traditional medicine first-aid kits have been distributed to rural villages till now, he said, adding that primary health care is provided in rural areas.

During the recent years of 2012 and 2013, Myanmar hosted and planned to host conference and meeting on traditional medicine in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
