Motorbikes the most imported through Myawaddy

Motorbikes were the most imported goods through Myawaddy Border Trade Zone from Thailand in November, according to border sources.

"The number of motorbikes imported through the border zone has increased significantly in the last month. Illegally imported items through border included alcohol, beer and cigarette generally. There are no other restricted items than these to import. Around 100 trucks carrying motorbikes come and go every day," said an official from the border center.

Twenty mostly imported products included motorbikes, liquefied gases, Vigo double cabs, cements, energy drinks, cosmetics, tires, soft drinks, garments, bicycles, medicines, soaps and foods.

In the month, the large volume of motorbikes imported had reached US$ 3.8 million.

Myanmar has imported more and more motorbikes from its neighboring countries such as China, Thailand and India over the past recent months, according to Ministry of Commerce.

As a consequence, the traffic police says more than five people are killed every day in traffic accidents in the country, mostly from motorcycle accidents.

There were 8,574 people who died due to traffic collisions from 2011 to August 2013. Among them, 4,287 were motorcycle riders, according to the Traffic Police Office.
