More flyovers to reduce traffic in Yangon - Minister

Yangon - Yangon's regional government plans to construct more flyovers with Japanese assistance to reduce traffic jams, transport minister Aung Khin told Eleven Media on Monday.

"All flyovers are in Yangon region. But if the traffic jams continue to happen, we have another plan to construct more flyovers with Japanese aid,” Aung Khin said.

Flyovers in Hledan, Bayintnaung and Shwe Gone Tine have been completed which has helped the flow of traffic in some of the cities worst junctions.

Yangon still remains a heavily congested city with poor road maintenance, a backward public bus system and outdated inner city circular railway.

City residents still complain of heavy traffic jams in many areas and the construction of flyovers will not solve the problem of traffic jams, the railways and transport minister said in a press conference in October.

The location of the new flyovers and the expense of the flyovers are still being analysed. Although a plan to construct flyovers at Myaynigone and Tarmwe junctions was announced, but it was halted due to a budget deficit.

The government has spent Ks 14 billion for Hledan flyover, Ks 13 billion for the Shwe Gone Tine flyover and Ks 21 billion for the Bayintnaung overpass. The total expense is over Ks 49 billion (US$ 49.8 million), according to Yangon City Development Council.
