Japan, South Korea propose to import transit buses

YANGON—Japan and South Korea have submitted a proposal for the Yangon region government to import transit buses, according to Yangon Transport Minister Aung Khin.

“South Korea is interested in shipping transit buses, and Japan too,” the minister said.

The buses would enhance the upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Aung Khin continued. Some local businessmen have reportedly arranged to buy buses for the BRT from South Korea.

The regional governments of Yangon and Mandalay announced that they would initially allow 50 buses in Yangon and 30 buses in Mandalay for the BRT.

The older buses are in poor condition but most of the replacements are personal cars. The import of buses has lessened.

Myanmar has destroyed more than 100,000 used vehicles, including 2,530 buses. But the country has imported only 2,699 buses, according to the Road Transport Administration department.

Most buses running in Myanmar are from Japan and South Korea, with used buses from China also in circulation.
