Construction of ships for Kalatan River project nearly completed

YANGON—The construction of two multi-purpose ships for the Kalatan River project, which are being built in Dagon Seikkan Dockyard, will be completed in May, according to the dockyard’s deputy superintending engineer.

“The construction of ships is nearly complete now. The whole project will be finished in May of coming year,” said Myat Thu.

The Indian government presented six, 300-tonne ships for the Kalatan River project. Those ships are docked in the Dhala, Dawpon and Dagon Seikkan dockyards.

The Kalatan River project’s multi-purpose transport project will include a 122-kilometre motorway from Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, to the border area of India. There will also be a 158-kilometre water way. By the end of this year, the construction of a bridge will be finished. Road construction will be completed in 2016.

Financing of about US$ 214 million (Ks 211.35 billion) is being provided to carry out development tasks, including US$ 74 million to upgrade the Sittwe Jetty and Kalatan River and about US$ 140 million for the construction of a highway from Palatwa to the Myanmar-India border area.
