Myanmar gets US$40m from eel export

Myanmar collected more than US$ 40 million (Ks 38.87 billion) from eel exports in the first seven months of this fiscal year (2013-14), according to recent data from the Department of Fisheries.

The department said the earning was US$ 10 million more than expected for the whole year.

Myanmar exported eel mostly to China through the border regions, said local producers.

Currently the country has no technical expertise to breed eel successfully, so mainly exports naturally captured eel.

Japanese producers are working together with local partners to farm a type of fish called Ngar Linpan locally, sources say.

The country also received nearly US$ 50 million from the same exports last fiscal year, the department said.
