Sydney Medical School, a branch school of University of Sydney and medical universities in Myanmar have agreed to work together in exchanging curriculums, giving scholarships to students, tutors and professors and doing research.
The Sydney Medical School has signed with Institute of Medicine, Mandalay and Institute of Medicine, Magway. It will continue to sign agreements with other medical universities including Institute of Medicine, Yangon.
“They will cooperate with most medical universities from here. It is for the first time cooperation between the universities between Myanmar and Australia. We are arranging to work together with other international universities,” sources from Institute of Medicine, Mandalay say.
Myanmar has offered top international universities from France, Sweden, Belgium and Italy to assist universities from Myanmar.
Outstanding students from University of Mandalay, University of Magway and Institute of Medicine, Mandalay have been won the scholarships from those universities.
“It has been a long time in our university. We have not enough teaching aids and instructors. About ten students have to use a microscope. 30 or 40 students have to teach with only a body at second year,” General Practitioner Dr. Aung Phyo Thant said.
“Our country is late for years in many sectors. It is a good sign to cooperate with foreign universities. Education is developed with trend in international and many improvements are happened based upon research,” Regional Director of Marie Stopes International Dr. Sit Naing said.”
“During former government era, they had cooperation with some regional countries in education sector but with only one or two schools. However current government is implementing the programme with universities across the country. The main thing is medical universities from Myanmar have weakness in teaching methods and learning parts in researching. Curriculums are the same but foreign universities are strong in research development so we have to emphasize in that part,” Dr. Sithu from Department of Health said.
