Mongolian employers, Myanmar chambers of commerce find common ground on investment

YANGON—After many years of geographic and economic distance between the two countries, the Myanmar-Mongolia Business Forum and Business Network has done a good job of narrowing the gap, participants say.

The event, jointly organized by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) and the Mongolian Employers Federation Association (MEFA), was held at the UMFCCI office on Wednesday. Among the attendees was Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj, who gave a speech.

During the event, the two sides discussed matters affecting the tourism industry, construction, mining, furniture manufacturing, technical cold storage and related equipment, health, education, the foodstuff industry, and lubricant enterprises, and investment in these industries in Myanmar.

“In the past, we had not approached them [Mongolia]. They said their products are aimed at meeting international standards. Mainly, we are going to join hands with them in the tourism sector. So they will be drawing up an air charter very soon,” said Myo Thet from the UMFCCI.

A senior delegation from the MEFA was visiting Myanmar for the first time.

“We were out of touch to each other because of geographical conditions. First, we needed to improve our tourism sector, which is certain to strengthen bilateral ties between Myanmar and Mongolia for a long time,” said Union Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Kan Zaw.

The diplomatic relationship between Myanmar and Mongolia began in 1956. The Mongolian president was visiting Myanmar for the first time and met with President Thein Sein in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.
