Health funds to be increased for family planning in 2020

NAY PYI TAW—Health funds will be increased to spend more on family planning in 2020, a move aimed at assisting about 15 million couples in Myanmar.

Dr Thein Thein Htay, Deputy Minister of Health, made the announcement a family planning pledge ceremony held in the nation’s capital on Friday.

The use of the process to control the birth rate is currently at 41 percent in Myanmar. The ministry hopes to increase that figure to 50 percent by 2015 and 60 percent by 2020, said the deputy minister.

In contrast, 12 percent of couples do not use family planning. The ministry aims to reduce that figure to less than 10 percent, he added.

Purchasing medicine and medical equipment was not part of the previous health expenditure. Starting in 2012-2013, the government has increased funds for the health and education sectors. Moreover, the government purchased medicine worth US$ 1.29 million (Ks 1.25 billion). That medicine could be provided to more than 300 towns across the nation, apart from the targeted areas. The ministry aims to spend more health funds in upcoming budget years, said the deputy minister.

The government is now drawing up a reproductive health strategy project covering 2014 to 2018. The FP/RH best practices conference will be hosted in Myanmar next year, with the Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights planned for 2016.

With the assistance of UNICEF, Myanmar is now one of 46 countries that use medicine and medical equipment for reproductive health.

Providing medicine to be used for family planning is also aimed at helping women live longer.
