EU-Myanmar task force to convene for first time

Bangkok (dpa) - A European Union-Myanmar task force will meet this week for the first time, the EU‘s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Monday.

"This first meeting of the EU-Myanmar Task Force brings together all of our instruments in order to take our partnership to the next level," said Ashton.

The EU-Myanmar Task Force will travel to Yangon and Naypyitaw on Wednesday for a three-day visit, with about 100 high-level EU executives and representatives of businesses, said a statement from Brussels.

Since 2012, the EU has dropped economic sanctions on Myanmar, increased development assistance and reinstated trade preferences for the once-pariah state.

The establishment of an EU-Myanmar Task Force was announced in March, the first such mechanism in Asia.

European Commission Vice-President for Industry and Entrepreneurship Antonio Tajani said the task force "represents a concrete answer to the requests raised both by the Myanmar government and by the Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi for strong European support to the process of democratic and economic transition in Myanmar."

"Europe wants to build an economic and political partnership with Myanmar, in particular through cooperation in strategic sectors, such as industry, SMEs, raw materials, standardisation and tourism," he said.

Representatives of civil society from both the EU and Myanmar will also participate in the task force.
