Thai and Chinese companies to explore wind energy in Myanmar

Companies from Thailand and China will carry out feasibility studies to generate wind power in Myanmar, according to a state newspaper.

Thailand's Gunkul Engineering Public Company and China's Three Gorges Company reached an agreement with the government to do the studies.

"The studies for possibility of wind power are now under way. If they are successful, it can be beneficial to the country," Aung Myo Wins, deputy director of the Ministry of Electrical Power was quoted by the New Light of Myanmar.

Myanmar currently provides electricity to only 30 percent of the population according to the Ministry of Electric Power. The biggest hindrance for foreign investment to Myanmar is the lack of a continual power supply.

Gunkul Engineering plans to study sites in Tanintharyi Region, Mon State, Kayin State and Shan State, expecting to build wind power plants which can produce up to 2930 Megawatts in total. The Three Gorges will make a feasibility study in Chin State, Rakhine State, Yangon and Ayeyarwady regions to build wind power plants which can produce 1102 Megawatts in total.
