DHL Expands Myanmar Presence

SINGAPORE, Oct. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL, has strengthened its Southeast Asian operations with the establishment of a 100 per cent fully-owned country office in Myanmar as part of DHL Global Forwarding South Asia. The move is a culmination of almost twenty years of operations through agency representation and includes the official opening of a DHL Global Forwarding office in Yangon and the appointment of Christoph Beier as Country Manager.

Kelvin Leung, CEO for Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding, said, "As a fast-developing country with a population of 60 million growing at around 6.5 per cent in 2012/13[Note 1], Myanmar has the potential of becoming one of the largest markets in Southeast Asia. A favorable production environment is also attracting investments from major international corporations across various industries. DHL Global Forwarding logistics experts based in Yangon will help bridge businesses in Myanmar with a network of international business partners both within and beyond the region."

The set up of DHL Global Forwarding's Myanmar operations is part of the company's accelerated expansion plans to firmly establish itself as market leader with international service standards delivered locally, regionally and globally.

Myanmar's growth in 2012-13 has been primarily driven by gas production, construction and services[Note 2] and DHL Global Forwarding Myanmar is fully equipped to support the continued growth of these sectors in addition to boosting the development of the consumer and technology sectors. Its operations will cover the company's full range of services including international freight forwarding, air and ocean consolidation, liner/NVOCC agency representation and customs brokerage as well as local transportation and warehousing. The business will operate according to DHL's global operational standards as well as standard IT systems which will be completely implemented by the end of the year.

Reporting to Thomas Tieber, CEO for South Asia, new Country Manager, Christoph Beier, moves over from the company's Bangladesh office to manage day-to-day operations and business development. In addition, he is responsible for driving growth in international freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing and logistics value-added services across the country, leveraging its heightened growth and FDI.

No stranger to the logistics business, Christoph joined DHL Global Forwarding in Germany in 2003 and worked with Air Freight Export Customer Service. He moved to Beijing to be the Operational Support Manager for the Europe Desk in 2010 and upon successful completion of his assignment in China, transferred to Bangladesh in early 2012. As Operations Manager in Bangladesh, Christoph's experience contributed significantly to improve the country's performance both in the market and within the DHL organization.

Said Tieber: "I welcome Christoph as the leader of our team in Yangon. He is very highly regarded in the industry, not only for his operations acumen and customer service experience, but his people-oriented leadership style as well. I am confident that his abilities spell an exciting future for DHL Global Forwarding Myanmar."

"Myanmar's geographical advantage and developing transportation infrastructure coupled with DHL's existing fleets and strong long-term strategic partnerships with leading local providers will enable DHL to maximize its potential to deliver maximum benefits to customers. All while ensuring complete compliance with the country's rules and regulations for shipping procedures and documentation," added Beier.
