The number of Myanmar nationals going abroad each year has now reached over 380,000, according to Aung Zaw Win, the director general for the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
He was addressing an audience at a tourism development forum held on August 3 in Yangon, Myanmar's commercial hub.
"In 2011, around 900 travelled abroad
every day. And in 2012, the daily number reached about 1000. Now, the
total number is now over 380,000 every year," he said.
The number has increased dramatically
since 2000 and most of them went to countries such as Thailand,
Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea,
Indonesia and Japan.
"Their purposes for going abroad are
leisure, shopping, adventure, health, medical check-up, education,
business and work," said Phone Pai Oo, the director for Ayarwaddy Legend
Tour Company.
"More Myanmar nationals go abroad
[nowadays]. They go on business. Some go for gems expo, study, and
leisure travel, etc.," said Thet Lwin, the managing director for Myanmar
Voyages Travel Company.
