Visiting Japanese Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism
Minister Akihiro Ota met with Myanmar President Thein Sein at the
Presidential Palace in the capital Naypyitaw on Monday, state media
reported Tuesday.
The meeting focused on infrastructure developments in Myanmar,
including upgrading airports and rail services, electric power
generation, tourism industry promotion, and preventative measures
against natural disasters, the state-run New Light of Myanmar daily
reported.
On Saturday, a consortium of Mitsubishi Corp. and a Japan
Airlines Co. affiliate won a contract to repair and operate an
international airport serving Mandalay. Moreover, the Japan
International Cooperation Agency is engaging in the process of upgrading
the country's railway systems.
Thein Sein at the meeting expressed his gratitude to Japan for
its crucial role in the implementation of the Thilawa Special Economic
Zone, near the country's largest city Yangon, the report said.
The president also told Ota he was happy to learn that
entrepreneurs from Japan will also cooperate in implementing the Dawei
Special Economic Zone project, jointly planned with neighboring
Thailand, near the town of Dawei in southern Myanmar, the report said.
The Japanese minister in return expressed his appreciation for
having the opportunity to cooperate in the development of Myanmar in all
aspects, it said.
On Sunday and Monday, Ota also held talks with the Myanmar transport and railways ministers.
