Bago river to provide fresh water for Special Economic Zones

Myanmar authorities are making a feasibility study of the Bago river to assess the supply of fresh water for the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), according to the reports of Water and Rivers Development Department.

The department is also carrying out surveys to assess the availability of fresh water in Kyaukphyu and Dawei.

“The salt water has to flow to Bago river in summer. So, we will store freshwater without altering the flow of saltwater. And then, we will build river water purifying factory and distribute freshwater to Thilawa SEZ,” said Thaung Lwin, Director of Water and Rivers Development Department.

The Bago river flows from the Bago mountain range and covers about 5,000 square kilometres. The freshwater to Thilawa SEZ will be supplied from a dam to be constructed above of No.2 Thanlyin Bridge on Bago River.

The authorities are planning to utilise freshwater from dams and artesian wells while building the industrial zones and have already started making measurements.

“We have already made the measurements from Darpain Township to Bago. So, we are going to make the measurements from Thanlyin bridge to Darpain,” Thaung Lwin added.

The Sun Tax company is cooperating making land route measurements from No.2 Thanlyin bridge to Darpain and My Association Company will estimate the cost of the measurements.

The Irrigation Department is building Zarmani and KoLuWe dams which will ensure a supply of freshwater for Thilawa SEZ.
