Win Aung to serve another term as chairman of Myanmar's commerce chambers

Win Aung, the current chairman of Myanmar's chambers of commerce and industry, has just been reelected on June 15 for a second four-year term.

The Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) is the largest national-level business organization in Myanmar, acting as a bridge between the State and private sector. It is also a focal point of international trade relations with other countries.

The federation held elections last Saturday to at their head office in Yangon and Win Aung, co-founder of Dagon International Ltd, was chosen for a second term. Similarly, most of the existing 129 executive members were re-elected in an election which took the whole of Saturday and finished only on 3am Sunday.

"The election process is 90 percent democratic. However, some people group themselves to vote [each other], but it just depends on the individual," an executive member said.

Critics claim that some senior members of the federation have a reputation for tax evasion. Founded in 1919, UMFCCI is a member of regional blocks of economic cooperation such as Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASEAN-CCI), the (BIMST-EC), Greater Mekong Sub-region Business Forum (GMS-BF) and Joint Economic Quadrangle Committee (JEQC).
