Eagles Air and Sea (Thailand) Co, a fully integrated logistics service provider, is eyeing Myanmar to boost its revenues after claiming success in Singapore.
"We plan to set up a joint venture with a
local partner there. The deal should be concluded this year," Wallapa
Stirachavarn, chief strategy director, said last week.
In 2006, the company she helped found
established a logistics subsidiary in Singapore, where her husband is
from. Had it not been for her farsighted vision, Eagles might have been
swallowed up by a giant logistics firm.
A strategic plan was laid out five years ago to prepare for the coming of the Asean Economic Community's single market in 2015.
"In those days, we thought Thailand would be either a gateway or a hub of the region," she said.
Myanmar will be a market of the future
full of opportunities like Thailand 20 years ago. But, Myanmar is
expected to build up faster than Thailand ever did since this is now the
hi-tech era.
Eagles started in 1990 from scratch engaged in only shipping with a few staff as a family business.
Eagles today provides a wide range of
logistics services from air and sea freight forwarding, free zone,
customs clearance, warehousing and distribution, pick and pack, and
domestic tracking to large goods transport. Its workforce has grown to
250. It is the general sales agent for the freight services of Tiger
Airways, Air Mandela and Sea Air. Its warehouse space has doubled to
8,000 square metres in five years.
More than half of its total revenue of
Bt200 million last year was still from the air-freight service, mainly
to South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion Island and Singapore.
Given the fierce competition, Eagles
also provides customised services to clients. For example, there is a
client located outside Thailand who shops online for products in
Singapore. The purchased products are stored at a warehouse in Thailand
before being exported to the client in the US. And finally, the items
are shipped to end-consumers through Eagles' global network of over 200
partners.
"Visual trade, also known as online
shopping, tends to grow rapidly. We have seen dramatic growth in
turnover from the visual trade using our logistics services, surging
more than 20 per cent over the past few years," she said.
This year Eagles plans to expand its
warehouse space at Suvarnabhumi Airport by 1,200sqm to 5,200sqm while
its space at Lat Krabang Industrial Estate will remain at 4,000sqm.
For its strategy for the next five
years, the company is positioning itself as the "logistics partner" of
its clients, providing consultation from the production process to
transport arrangement.
