Imphal, April 20 2013 : Continuing India's search for investment opportunities, a team of Indian delegates would be visiting Myanmar from May 26.Chief Minister of Manipur O Ibobi Singh is likely to be one of the main and important delegates in the team.

According to a highly placed source, proposed visit of the Indian delegates to be facilitated by Indian Chamber of Commerce would covered Monywa and Mandalay and would meet concerned officials to discuss investment opportunities in certain areas.

Considering the development, Indian Chamber of Commerce is planning to include Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh as part of the Indian delegation during the visit to Myanmar from May 26 next, the source disclosed.

The main purpose of the visit, of course, would be to further strengthen the good relationship between the two neighbouring countries specially in the field of trade and commerce.

However, taking a slight shift from the primary objective of the visit, the delegates would also focus on investment opportunities in Myanmar, the source explained.

The Indian delegation would be focusing more on the various natural resources available in abundance in Myanmar like coal; probabilities of producing energy from rivers; health care issues, education, culture and sports among others, the source added.

During the proposed visit, the delegation from India would mainly focusing their talks with the Myanmarese authorities on the issue of using coal abundantly available in Myanmar to establish a thermal Power Station.

Apart from this, they will also be discussing the probabilities of producing hydro electric power from the rivers of Myanmar.

It is said that Government of Thailand had earlier shown similar interest for investment opportunities in Myanmar.

However, the Myanmar authorities, though, not responded anything on the matter to the Thailand Government, is showing interest towards India Government.

Consequently, the visit of Indian delegates has been worked out.

During the course of their visit, Indian delegates would also be discussing issues related to free movement of tourists in both the countries.

However, as far as tourists attraction are concern, Myanmar authorities have always been on the negative side and are reluctant to allow people from either side to cross the border, the source pointed out, adding that Myanmar authorities are in favour of taking care of the visiting tourists under the close surveillance of their army personnel from behind.

It may be noted here that as of now, if at all, any tourists desire to visit Myanmar, they have to clearly indicate the number of persons entering into the country, places to be visited and the number of days to stay.

Meanwhile, Manipur State Government has made known to Myanmar Government about the verbal proposal placed by Myanmarese delegates who visited Manipur in the month of the March this year with regard to extending power supply to Myanmar.

The matter is likely to be discussed by Manipur Government after receiving a written proposal from the Myanmar Government officially, another source disclosed.
