ADB discusses future projects in Myanmar

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has discussed with Myanmar authorities over the projects that should be prioritised in the country, according to official sources.

The visiting ADB officials, led by Putu M Kamayana, met in Yangon with Aung Naing Oo, director-general of the directorate of investment and company administration under the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.

The group discussed which projects needed to be prioritised by the Myanmar government between 2013 and 2015.

Naing Oo said after the meeting that the ADB would first help Myanmar transform its nearly hundred year old outdated Myanmar Company Act, and take its company registration system online.

Moreover, the ADB would render support in the prioritised sec¬tors, he added.

Myanmar joined the ADB in 1973, but it has not received direct assistance in more than 20 years due to international sanctions imposed on the country for its gov¬ernment’s human rights violations.

Myanmar embarked on a path of political and economic reforms in 2011, after which sanctions have been eased in stages. The ADB stepped up its presence in the country in August last year by assigning more staff to extended missions there.
