Government has begun to buy
3,000 tones of rice for reserve in Rakhine State above market price to
help ease financal burden on local farmers, according to informed
sources.
The state already bought about 2,000
bags of Emahta and Ngesein and the government expected to buy about
60,000 bags of rice from the rice miller associations from respective
townships between February-March 2013.
The National Rice Reserves Supervisory
Committee of Myanmar gave 13,500 kyats (about US$15) for 50 kg per bag
of Ematha (25 percent broking) and 12,500 kyats (about US$14) for 50 kg
per bag of Ngasein (25 percent broking). The committee offered price is
higher than current market price in Rakhine and intended for the famers
to cover the expense of production cost per acre.
“Now we started to buy rice. The actual
market price is 11,000 kyats (about US$12) for a bag of Ematha and we
have offered 13,500 kyats (about US$15). We are closely watching the
current market price in the region. We prefer to buy rice instead of
paddy because we want the better living conditions for the rice mail
owners, farmers and farm workers,” said Soe Paing, Manager of State
Agricultural Products Enterprise.
The sellers can sell to rice millers or the National Rice Reserves Supervisory Committee any day.
